Lesson Outline
We studied conflict, style , characterization, and point of view in today's session. In terms of style, Ben astutely observed that the novella was a mixture of "fairy tale and Shakespeare" which is an apt way to characterize this story which presents itself as a parable but is enhanced by Steinbeck's poetic metaphors and symbolism. We discussed Steinbeck's characterization of the arrogant doctor noting specific textual support and explored how this characterization highlights the conflict between the upper class and the poor indigenous people of La Paz ,Mexico. Ben also thoughtfully explained the symbolism of Kino's God like detachment from the trapped ants on the floor of his hut . We discussed Kino as a tragic figure whose sin is to attempt to ascend from a caste system that prevents the poor from bettering themselves.
