Lesson Topic
The Pearl
Lesson Outline
We first completed a textual support exercise wherein I placed on the board a literary definition of "Naturalism" and Ben identified textual passages that exemplified the genre. Next, we discussed the societal reaction to Kino's finding the pearl noting how each person- from the priest to the town beggar- sees Kino's good fortune as an opportunity for self-aggrandizement. We last discussed the narrator's observation that human beings are "superior' because they have "the talent" of never being satisfied . We observed the narrator's tone was perhaps facetious given the novella is a parable illustrating how wealth can destroy a person's life. While recognizing the moral tone of the book, Ben nevertheless offered a number of interesting insights noting how greed can act as a motivation and perhaps is a "talent."
