Lesson Topic
The Pearl
Lesson Outline
Today we studied how the author's metaphors highlight the Naturalist genre. We first noted the continued use of the word "trap" . Then Ben read two metaphors -one describing large fish eating smaller ones and one describing a hawk eating a mouse. We then discussed how these metaphors mirror Steinbeck's view of class exploitation and ineluctable human destiny. Next, we analyzed how the pearl changes the character of both Juana and Kino but in different ways. Again, I had Ben study the text to support and at times change his initial conclusions . We further reviewed the vocabulary words from the first 3 chapters as well as our agenda for the next week and for the final exam on the novel which will be given May 20 and 21st.
