The Pearl
Lesson Outline
We continue to examine how Steinbeck's Naturalism, a belief that external forces ,laws, and cultural rules, dictate destiny. Ben read a passage from the novella and articulately discussed how the Church and religion act as an external force by preaching that the poor must accept their station in life and that to oppose the caste system of La Paz is a sin against God. We further compared the second procession into town by Kino and Juana noting how this time Juana walks behind Kino signifying their discord over whether the Pearl is a blessing or evil. Additionally, we noted the foreshadowing in the pearl dealer's legerdemain in making a coin appear and then disappear. Last, we reviewed Ben's vocabulary work based on words used in the novel.
