8.7 Cross sections
Lesson Outline
Today Aiden had an excellent class. Yesterday we introduced the concept of cross sections, so Aiden already had some previous understanding. We considered slicing a loaf of bread in the shape of a rectangular prism. We thought about how the area of the cross sections would change if we sliced the bread horizontally versus vertically. After calculating the areas of each cross section, we recognized that if the bread was sliced horizontally it would have different dimensions and actually produce a larger surface area than if cut vertically. Next we discussed the definitions of a pyramid versus a prism. Aiden understood and was able to give examples of each. Lastly, we saw a triangular pyramid, considered the cross section would produce a triangle, and then used the formula A=1/2BH to find the area of a cross section. Aiden said he is enjoying Chapter 8 so far. He didn't realize there was more to Geometry like what he's seen so far. :)
