We examined the tangible items and the intangible qualities Kino lost as a result of finding the pearl. We first noted the tangible loss of home and a sacred canoe. Then on the board we addressed the critical intangible loss of innocence, a peaceful marriage and family life, identity ,and values. This comparison led to a discussion on the difference between boredom and peace as well as the value of accepting
(or not) one's role or station in society . Last, we identified the cultural values that compel Juana to remain loyal to Kino even though she fears his stubbornness and his insistence on trying to thwart fate and to fight society.
