Lesson Outline
We began with summer reading; I read The World According to Humphrey for 15 minutes and recorded it in Cade's summer reading log. As I read, we paused to practice reading comprehension strategies such as summarizing and making predictions. Next, Cade practiced alphabetic awareness skills (sequencing the alphabet, etc.) I think that he is close to understanding the concept of a syllable. We played a game of Phonics Dice to solidify closed, open, and silent-e syllables. For oral reading fluency, Cade read two decodable books, "I Like Soccer" and "Will at Bat." I dictated sentences from the book for Cade to write and edit using the acronym CAPS. I used Elkonian boxes to help Cade identify the sounds in words (such as "grip"). This proved to be an effective strategy.
