Aiden reviewed the principles of relative-age dating: superposition, original horizontality, lateral continuity, inclusions and cross-cutting relationships. He drew diagrams of each principle. He examined a diagram of layers of rock containing fossils and used the law of superposition to relative age date the fossils and rock layers. He also identified rock layers indicating mass extinctions.
