Call of the Wild
Lesson Outline
We continue to develop Colson's reading comprehension skills using our novel.Call of the Wild. Today, I prepared a very short comprehension exercise based on the homework reading which we completed during our first segment. Colson had some difficulty but ,with some assistance , evidenced a good degree of understanding. We also revisited a motif of the final chapters -the conflict between the wild and domesticity -and read through the next pages of the novel noting textual evidence of this conflict. We further discussed how Buck's killing a bear marks his climb up the primordial food chain as during the early portions of the novel he attempted to kill a small rabbit and later does slay Spitz, the lead dog. As he becomes more wolf-like ,the size of his prey likewise grows.
