We learned to categorize changes to materials as either physical or chemical. A physical change changes the form or state of matter but not the material or molecular structure. No new substance is formed. In a chemical change the original substance turns into a new substance with new properties characterized by an energy change due to the release or absorption of heat. We proceeded to identify actions depicting physical and chemical changes. We concluded with an experiment where we created a chemical reaction when we created elephant toothpaste.
