Unit 3 Earth’s Changing Landscape
Lesson Outline
Lesson 3 Design Solutions to Slow Landscape Changes – We learned that people can change the landscape to control changes that might occur when natural forces are at work. Farm fields can be arranged to reduce the effect of wind erosion. We discovered that rocks and plants can be used to slow beach erosion. We performed an experiment where we tested windbreak designs.

Unit 3 Earth’s Changing Landscape
Lesson Outline
We created a hill out of clay and covered it with sand. Then we simulated heavy rain on the hill. We observed how the flooding forced the sand down the hill. We repeated the experiment a second time with new, dry sand but added our version of straw waddles which we pinned down with toothpicks. We recorded our observations, analysis, and conclusion.

Unit 3 Earth’s Changing Landscape
Lesson Outline
We learned about what people can do to slow the changes to Earth’s landscape. We discovered how water erosion affects a hill. Then we explored the use of straw waddles to slow water erosion. We created an experiment to simulate the effect of straw waddles to slow the water erosion. We created a hill out of clay and straw waddles out of paper towels. We held the straw waddles down in the clay with toothpicks and used a paper cup with holes to simulate rain.

Electric Circuits
Lesson Outline
We learned how to use a power supply, conductive path, and light bulb to build an electrical circuit. Then we added a switch to open or close the circuit. Next, we added more power to increase the brightness of our lightbulb.

Unit 3 Earth’s Changing Landscape
Lesson Outline
We have been studying the types of slow changes to Earth’s landscape. We conducted an experiment to learn about weathering and how it changes rocks and other natural resources on Earth. We simulated a hill getting smaller as the sand blows off just as our beaches become smaller as the sand is removed by wind and water weathering. Then we worked on creating a volcano to simulate fast changes to Earth’s landscape.
