Lesson Topic
short a: an/am, sight words
Lesson Outline
Patrick learned another sound to short a; a as in an/am. He read numerous words containing the short a sound and changed the pronunciation of the a sound when he observed the a followed by n or m. He did a fantastic job of blending together sounds. He used the short a words that he read and we created an ad-lib story. He read Level B: Games We Play. He took a picture walk and predicted that the story would be all about different games the children play which was accurate. As he read, he used his "meaning clues" and "picture clues" many times to make sense of difficult words such as "dress up, video games, baseball, hide and seek, etc." He was not able to identify fire or house. He highlighted the sight words in the story; play, like, to, not, but, do, we, and with, in addition to the, is, in, and on from Friday. He practiced writing them onto index cards. We used those word cards to play sight word POP! He would draw a card, identify it, and use it in a sentence. We practiced "do and with" additionally and by the end of the activity, he mastered identifying all 12.
