Lesson Topic
short e, non fiction characteristics
Lesson Outline
Patrick went on a short e hunt around the school, searching for items that had the short e sound it's name. He independently found desk and shelf, as well as his peers names, Yanuell, Ayden, and Devon. With clues provided, he found red, legos, etc. (I see a color with a short e sound, a toy that you build with, etc.) We identified the characteristics of a book that falls in the nonfiction genre. Patrick was introduced to real topics, a table of contents, photographs with labels and captions, special print and a glossary. As a guided task, he explored through a nonfiction basket of books and identified many of the characteristics in each one. For each real topic that we read, Patrick generated an idea of a topic that would not be real. We created a document on Microsoft Word that included a list of characteristics. He tried to recall as many as he remembered. While he couldn't remember the name of all of the items, he remembered what most of them were for. This will be posted in his room for him to refer to throughout the year.
