short i/exclamations/questions, writer's workshop: drafting
Lesson Outline
Had car trouble and ran 45 minutes behind. Patrick and I sang our "Vowel Jingle" as a reminder of of what sound the short vowel i makes. He read Jim Had a Big Hit and practiced phonetically sounding out many words with the short i sound as well as other sight words and sounds, but emphasis was on the short i skill. Patrick often omits beginning sounds of words, throwing his word accuracy off. He also reverses the letter b & d during reading and writing. Prior to reading, we also sang our exclamation jingle reminding us that exclamations show emotions. During reading, he practiced identifying exclamation and question sentences, and ranging his voice accordingly. He did a beautiful job with reading with expression and seems to enjoy it. Following reading, in his book he searched for and recorded short i words, an exclamation, and a question in his notebook.
