Session Date
Lesson Topic
European Exploration of Florida (start)
Lesson Outline
We started the day by reviewing Ayden's first Florida project item, due this Thursday, 10/24/13, in accordance with the itemized list given to Ayden last Thursday, 10/17/13. Ayden was reminded to give the itemized list to this mother; he said he would do so. We began studying Spanish exploration of Florida, discussing Ponce de Leon and Hernando de Soto. Images of both were used in the lesson. Ayden seemed quite interested in the topic, especially when he learned that the Native Americans (the Calusa tribe) defended themselves, killing de Leon with a poison arrow, and holding off de Soto long enough for him to die of fever. We then moved to French exploration of Florida, noting that the Huguenots left France in order to seek religious freedom. French piracy of Spanish ships was also addressed. Finally, we reviewed the meaning of the word "native."
