Famous Community Helpers
Lesson Outline
Maya and I read a short biography of Cesar Chavez and completed a workbook "monument" comprehension assignment. We then read about Lois Marie Gibbs and the Love Canal in New York. We discussed community activism, pollution, and helping others. We watched a few brief videos, discussed new vocabulary, and completed the comprehension page on Lois Gibbs in her workbook. At the end of the session, Maya used her keyboarding and computer skills to research famous women and children who helped their communities. We created a preliminary list of people she is interested in learning about in upcoming sessions.
