Lesson Topic
Hurricane Katrina/Planning for biographies
Lesson Outline
Maya and I planned for her next set of assignments based on her interests. She requested that we study women and children in history who served their communities. We previewed many individuals and she selected three women and three children.
The majority of our session was spent reviewing community helpers concepts and vocabulary, and researching Hurricane Katrina. Maya created a K-W-L chart, writing about what she knows and what she wanted to know. As we researched what she wanted to learn, she completed the chart, taking notes and giving details about the self-selected topics: how hurricanes form, the intensity of the storm, how New Orleans was rebuilt after the storm, the animals that were rescued, and how children and adults helped the displaced people and animals.
The vocabulary she reviewed included: volunteers, storm surge, rebuild.
