Lesson Outline
I read aloud from Diary of a a Wimpy Kid. Patrick and I both made personal connections throughout the read aloud. Then Patrick and I went to the computer lab to choose a new story from A to Z Reading.com. He wanted to participate in choosing his book, which is an excellent skill to develop at a young age. It also gives ownership in reading and learning. Patrick chose a book for school and a book for home. At school he read Level E The Vet. He read mostly fluent and demonstrated comprehension and curiosity. Each page discussed an animal that was hurt and Patrick asked how it happened. After reading Patrick and I added a sentence to explain how it may have happened. This was perfect to encourage Patrick to write while working on the cause and effect comprehension strategy.

Lesson Comments
Patrick almost completely shutdown when we discussed writing today. He kept telling me over and over that he didn't want to write. I gave him some time alone (I went to the bathroom) he came looking for me and seemed a bit better. We ended up adding sentences to the book he read aloud and he successfully turned his attitude around:) His reading continues to improve.
