Lesson Outline
We started the lesson briefly reviewing the concept of main idea and details. Then I gave Patrick several picture cards to divide into 5 groups of his choice. Once he separated his pictures I asked him to think of one word or phrase for the group. Then I asked him to make sure that all of the details fit into the main idea category he created. He was very successful. When we went over his main ideas and details we came across one detail that did not fit into the main idea category. He easily revised the main idea to make it work. We then repeated the process with animal cards based on a story I chose for him. Before even seeing the book he determined the categories exactly as described in the book! I was very impressed. It is also important to note that Patrick is excellent at reflecting and revising as he works. He categorized the animals into animal that live in the water, live in trees, live on land, and live in holes or caves. Then Patrick read Level D Where Animals Live. He began labored and choppy and then more fluent. We will reread the book on Wednesday to improve fluency and to compare Patrick's identified main ideas to the verbiage in the book.

Lesson Comments
Patrick has excellent thinking skills! Unfortunately, I feel like I am starting to notice a regression in his reading and writing abilities. I am hoping it has just been a few off days, but it is worth noting my concerns.
