Reading, Word Study & Sentence Structure
Lesson Outline
Patrick and I worked on reading and writing sight words. I identified four tricky words for Patrick (other, were, about, word) and we played a version of Connect Four with the words. Then Patrick practiced sentence dictation. I read 3 sentences to him using only words from the sight word lists and he wrote them. After that we focused on making words with the short -a word stems. At first the concept was difficult and Patrick was wanting to guess. I explained to him that he didn't need to guess, but to use the words to help him. That seemed to help because he started doing much better. After word ladders, we worked on a level F passage called Mountains. This was a great instructional passage because it allowed us to focus on decoding. After the passage we started a chapter book of Patrick's choice, Wizards. We alternated reading. Lastly, we discussed the components of a sentence. I wrote several sentences and Patrick determined if they were sentences. When they were not he identified why and wanted to fix them. Patrick and I accomplished a lot today.

Lesson Comments
Patrick is still struggling tremendously with spelling basic sight words. During reading I noticed he has still not mastered the ability to read me, my, or your. I wrote the date as 6/25 on one of our papers today. Patrick pointed to the 6 and asked me if it was suppose to be a 6 or a 2. I asked what he thought and he said he had no idea:(
