Lesson Outline
Mary's assignment was to ensure that her revised essays had been printed out PRIOR to class. When I arrived for class she said her computer had not been working since last night, therefore she hadn't been able to print out. I determined that the problem was that her battery was empty and she needed to plug in the computer. Once we got the computer going, she I realized that she had been working on her paper in an odd word processing program. She needed to email it to herself, then go on a JBP computer, save it to microsoft word, and reformat it. I had a big talk with her about how vital it will be for her to purchase microsoft word ASAP for college. I mentioned that she had wasted 20 minutes of class time reformatting something that was perfectly formatted 4 days ago. We printed out both papers. I started looking at one and realized that this wasn't mary writing. I reminded her what plagiarism is and she insisted that it was all her own words. I typed the suspicious phrases into Google and found that she had plagiarized in at least three places from at least 3 online sources: Sparknotes.com, bookrags.com and possibly schmoop.com I explained to her how severe the consequences of plagiarism could be in college. We had a stern talk.
