Mary's essays
Lesson Outline
Once again, Mary did not have her essays (not even one) printed out. We spent 15 minutes getting it printed and then into the right format. (She had forgotten about MLA format). The first thing I did was sit down and read it in front of her the way a teacher or professor will read an essay. I read the intro and then the conclusion. Then I read thru the rest and circled any mistakes. I highlighted 4 problematic sentences (run-ons or fragments) and then I handed it to her and asked her to find out why the things I had circled were wrong. WE talked again abou tthe importance of reading your paper out loud (to a wall, to a tree, to an empty room) to find the kind of errors you won't catch if you are reading silently. She had forgotten this step on this re-write. I told her we all do and that it's a long, painstaking, pain in the neck process that must be done. We transitioned into Diane's class with this discussion and Diane confirmed that that's what she's been talking about with Mary. It was a good transition for Mary and it was good to hear that the two teachers were on exactly the same page.
