Lesson Topic
The use of probability in the search for extraterrestrial life
Lesson Outline
Jared had worked so hard during the first class today, that for Statistics we watched a TED talk given by Seth Shostak, the director of SETI. In the talk, Dr. Shostak recounted a bit on the history of the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, and then touched on the probabilities of finding it. After the video, Jared and I discussed the Drake equation again, and Jared understood how the whole equation is based on subjective probabilities. We discussed the subject in terms of all three approaches to calculating a probability in light of their pros and cons.

Lesson Comments
Jared was visibly relaxed as compared to the first hour, and this lesson turned out to be a great lesson. We concluded the class by discussing a problem I had swung by Jared yesterday, and he was elated when he saw the relatively simple algebraic solution to it … A great way to finish this week.
