Overseas Trade
Lesson Outline
We watched Episode 2 of the BBC "Connections" series--"Death in the Morning." It began with ancient times in Asia Minor with the people of Lydia finding and panning for gold. The increased us of the touchstone to determine what was gold and what was not led to the emergence of coins, facilitating trade. Developments in seamanship and navigation cause trade to explode. Increased travel over oceans resulted in closer examination of weather, leading to the cloud chamber. Which, in turn, led to the development of the nuclear bomb--Death in the Morning at Hiroshima on an August morning in 1945.

Lesson Comments
This was a fair-to-good session. During the course of the 50-minute video, Hunter's attention was distracted at least a half dozen times by text messages arriving on his cell phone. I told him to lose the phone several times, to no avail. My phone rang once during the session. I ignored it. I expect similar courtesy from Hunter and all other students.
