Bioaccumulation -
Paige and Kelly worked together to work a bioaccumulation lab. We used test tubes to examine the movement of toxins, which are in direct opposite progression as energy in the food chain. We used food color to represent plastic beads floating in the ocean, and (let’s say) one tiny fish consumes one bead each, while feeding on the algae that is attracted to the buoyant bead. As an anchovy moves through and eats the tiny fish, and several beads, then a herring comes along and eats up several anchovies and the beads accumulate. A tuna arrives and eats many herring. The girls were asked how many tuna they have eaten in their lives.
