Lesson Topic
Reading Assessment, Vocabulary builder activity, Steps to Writing a Research Paper
Lesson Outline
First Jake completed a grammatical assignment where he had to revise two incorrect sentences. Next, Jake and I read The Drummer Boy of Shiloh by Ray Bradbury. We stopped frequently to synthesize the symbolic wording of the story with the author's purpose. We pointed out literary elements and made a list of vocabulary unfamiliar to Jake. At the end Jake wrote a short summary of the story using two pieces of evidence from the story. We discussed ways to revise his summary and, lastly, we covered the steps to writing a research paper and discussed which book he would like to focus on during our sessions.

Lesson Comments
Jake is a very attentive student. His reading fluency needs some work as he rushes through the text, but he showed a great amount of comprehension as we read the story together. I wonder if this holds true when he reads on his own (which I will assess as we go on).
