Lesson Topic
Early America: Articles of Confederation
Lesson Outline
Zach and I covered chapter 6 and the beginning of chapter 7 focusing on the political and cultural environment of the new nation. We discussed the growing abolitionist and universal suffrage movements, the ideas of James Madison in his pamphlet "Thoughts on Government", as well as Thomas Jeffreson's "Establishing religious Freedom". We also went over the economic turmoil in the new nation, including inflation and repossession of property; how the bankrupt nation had trouble paying their veterans, and the resulting Shay's rebellion. This lead us into a discussion about the failures of the Articles of Conferederation, and the need to have the Philadelphia Convention in May 1987. Next, Zach wrote a detailed outline for the long essay style question that will be on the AP US History exam on the failures of the Articles of Confederation.
