Session Date
Lesson Topic
The Constitution and George Washington's presidency
Lesson Outline
Zach and I covered the debate around and ratification of the Constitution. We covered the positions of the federalists and anti-federalists in detail, centering on the positions of Hamilton/Adams and Madison/Jefferson. We then covered the multiple compromises that were made to prepare the Constitution to be suitable for ratification. Zach then took a quiz on this content. Next, we covered the early political challenges for the new nation including: George Washington's legacy as president, foreign policy acts like the Treaty of San Lorenzo, John Jay's Treaty (Of Amity, Commerce and Navigation with Great Britain,), and the Neutrality Acts; and the political divisiveness around the creation of a national bank, relations with France and Britain, and the development of the abolitionist and women's suffrage movements.
