Science Lab Questions
Lesson Outline
We discussed the answers to the questions on her science lab including thermal energy, temperature, phase changes, etc. When the ice melted in her experiment, there was a counter-intuitive dip in temperature. This dip was the result of the heat energy being absorbed by the breaking of the bonds in the solid water turning it to liquid. This effect tapers off until all of the ice is melted while simultaneously the liquid water that is formed begins absorbing heat energy. Eventually, the latter overcomes the former and the temperature begins to rise again until the temperature of the water in the test tube equals the temperature of the water in the cup and the temperature remains constant.
