Biology:
Plant Dissection -
Kelly came prepared to conduct a dissection of a flower. We toured the school grounds for a suitable flower to dissect, and settled on a ginger flower. We used dissection tools to isolate the male and female portions of the flower. We used the binocular microscope to examine pollen, and ovum. I instructed Kelly to slice a section of the ovary, to view with the high-powered microscope. We examined prepared slides for comparison, and Kelly drew her observations in the lab report. She then labeled, and classified, images of flowers before answering questions about the anatomy of a plant.

Kelly's Geography project is finished, so she wanted to catch up on other things. We reviewed a list of the books that she should read over the summer or in her free time that will help her to increase her vocabulary, improve her writing, and provide her with the cultural references and foundation that will be helpful for college and standardized tests.
Kelly took several online quizzes to practice identifying various propaganda techniques, from "loaded words" to "glittering generalization". This is in preparation for Animal Farm, which she will be reading soon.
