Lesson Outline
It was wonderful to meet Loulie and to have an opportunity to work with her this week. Our theme for the week will be “Under the Sea”. We will study ocean creatures both as characters in fiction picture books and in nonfiction. She shared that she loves the ocean and is very interested in learning about all the creatures that live in the sea.
We began today’s session by reading and discussing the book “Rainbow Fish” by Marcus Pfister. Loulie was very excited and shared that she had just received the book for Christmas. We talked about the beginning, middle, and end in a short retelling. Next, we worked on our own Rainbow Fish. She decided that it would be great to have a puppet show and I feel it would be a nice way to create an interdisciplinary unit, so we are turning them into puppets. We cut the fish out and painted and colored them and began to put the bits of sparkles on them. We will finish them tomorrow.
For mathematics we played the fishing game. We created a bar graph of the colors of the fish we caught. Then we played a “Going Fishing” game that incorporated adding and subtracting within 10. She brought the game home to play with her family. She will bring this back tomorrow, so we can continue with our addition and subtraction practice.
After lunch and a short recess break, we read 2 other books in the Rainbow fish series and discussed the plot for our puppet show. It was a quick, fun-filled morning, She really seems to enjoy role playing and is excited to plan our puppet show!
