Lesson Outline
This morning Morgan practiced her list 22 spelling list and review of the two vocabulary words sidewalk and lawyer. Since it is Thrilling Thursday, she typed her words for practice. Much later in the morning, Morgan was tested on her words and got all of them correct (now spelling the two words she missed in the morning, correctly). She had the vocabulary and bonus words correct all morning. We continued our literature study of the book Fables by Arnold Lobel. We read and discussed the stories The Ducks and the Fox, The Lobster and The Crab, The Cat and His Visions, and King Lion and the Beetle. Morgan provided a written response to a follow-up question for each story as well. To practice the skill of inferring, Morgan discussed her thoughts on the moral of the final two stories by writing in our Fables project. For the King Lion and the Beetle, she inferred that if you get caught up in power too much, then nothing good will ever happen. Morgan is demonstrating great work in her inferring of these morals, which is a testament to her strong character. Additionally, we added a card to our fables vocabulary, discussing the meaning of medicine chest. We continued our study of adverbs with a book entitled, Andrew and Allen Learn about Adverbs, by Joanna Jarc Robinson. In this storytelling boys go on a class trip to the zoo and use adverbs to describe the actions and events of the animals at the zoo. As we read the story, we found adverbs and we brainstormed ideas as to how the boys could have written their sentences with adverbs and then read what they wrote. We talked about the differences between adjectives and adverbs and how they are used. We reviewed Morgan’s 5 Latin vocabulary words (all adverbs) and listened to the accompanying CD to practice our pronunciation. Morgan then scored a 100% on the assessment and in the bonus portion wrote a sentence using not one, but two adverbs!
Morgan completed her journal that she began the other day. We reviewed her content for spelling and structure. She rewrote several sentences as she needed to add words and make complete sentences instead of using fragments. Finally, we worked on Science. We reviewed the first two lessons of the unit with the basics of electricity, static electricity, conductors, and insulators. In lesson 6.3, we learned more circuits and switches by reading the two pages on the subject. We used my bangle bracelet with a clasp to look at open and closed circuits and how disconnecting the bracelet and leaving it open would stop the flow of electricity. We also used the light switch in the kitchen to discuss switches and their involvement with open (light off) and closed (light on) circuits.
