Lesson Outline
This morning Morgan practiced her list 23 spelling words in a practice test format. For Thrilling Thursday, she practiced by writing them on the wipe board instead of in her notebook. She had difficulties with friend, horrible, and guard, so we practiced those several extra times. We continued working on her fable writing. We finished the revising and editing phase for Morgan’s story, The Octopus and the Dolphin. She wrote her final copy and illustrated a picture to accompany her story. For grammar practice, Morgan completed a multi-tasked activity. She corrected two sentences for capitalization and punctuation. She also practiced writing sentences with the sight words always, around, because, and been. We worked through each sentence for structure, spelling, and grammar. For example, her sentence for because was technically three sentences of dialogue, but was written as one sentence. We looked at various other simpler ideas for use of the word. Additionally, we practiced using singular and plural nouns. In writing, we continued working on Morgan’s own fable. We discussed the moral she had developed for her story and thought further about the idea behind it. In science today, we reviewed lessons 6.1-6.3. In lesson 6.4, we discussed the types of circuits. We read about series circuits which offer only one path for electricity to flow. If one piece becomes negatively affected, everything on this circuit stops working. We also talked about parallel circuits in which there is more than one path of electricity. If a piece gets disconnected, the item can still function. For literature, we began our unit on fairy tales. We discussed that fairy tales are folktales that take place in a magical setting and feature good and evil characters. From the Grimm’s Fairy Tales by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, we read The Fisherman and his Wife. We read about the fisherman’s greedy wife who kept making her husband ask the king fish in the sea for more and more power. We saw how the sea became upset and at her final request to be the Lord of the Sun and Moon, we saw that the king fish then just took everything away. We then read The Golden Goose. We read how the simplest of three boys was rewarded with a golden goose, which led to a princess bride due to his showing kindness and sharing with a little old man. We discussed both stories for comprehension and recall. Morgan did a great job with these fairy tales. Finally, we began Latin lesson 16. This lesson focuses on the constellations. We read that constellations are groups of stars that form pictures in the sky. These myths were by the very early Greek and Roman civilizations. Scientists and sailors use them to map the sky. The vocabulary for this unit is: Aquarius, Aries, Cancer, Capricorn, Gemini, and Virgo.
