Lesson Outline
This morning we began with a quick oral review of some of Morgan’s list 23 spelling words. We then took the test. Morgan did a terrific job spelling 9 of her 10 words correctly. She independently corrected the word does once she had been informed it was incorrect. She got her two vocabulary words and the bonus word correct. For grammar, Morgan continued a practice of singular and plural nouns. She provided the missing version of each word as only the singular or plural was provided. She then read sentences and in 5 sentences worked to change the noun (and any necessary words) from singular to plural and in 5 different sentences, do the opposite by changing the plural noun to singular. Morgan did a nice job and only needed a little help with the verb agreement on two occasions. We are still working on capitalization and end punctuation in her writing. For our fairy tales unit in literature, Morgan and I read, Beauty and the Beast as retold by Jan Brett. We discussed the events and the characters as we read. We also discussed vocabulary concepts such as dissuade, implored, and midst. After reading the story, I prompted Morgan through recall of the story through writing. We worked on writing informational sentences (without dialogue) to talk about the major events in the story sequentially. As we worked through our sentences, we focused on proper sentence structure, grammar, and spelling. Morgan then read a Disney publication of the same story. We will compare and contrast the two stories in our next session. For the last few minutes of our morning session, Morgan matched the pictures of her six constellations to their Latin and English meanings. We finished up the day with an online Lindamood Bell session. In her session, Morgan practiced finding numbers on an imaginary number line, counting backwards from a higher point on this number line (0 - 50), counting back by 5s and 10s on unusual parts of the number line (for example 26 to 21), and visualizing adding and subtracting on the number line. Morgan earned a Magical Learning Moment for her amazing work of jumping up and down on the number line. She continued with math activities by practicing addition and subtraction flashcards as well as multiplication problems presented orally and through a game of war. She practiced reading her targeted sight word flashcards and more of her Anne of Green Gables chapter book.
