Lesson Outline
We kicked off the morning with spelling. Morgan chose 18 of the 35 words from review list 24 to practice for this week. She wrote the words in her notebook. She picked two words to write sentences and we reviewed those for grammar and spelling. Her bonus word of the week is wrath. We looked this up in the dictionary and she wrote that it means “great anger” on her list. She worked in her spelling book to find hidden words from her list, which were all related to things that could be found in a hardware store. She also filled in the blanks of a “calendar” to help a boy accomplish his tasks for the week with words like lawn, rabbit, and pull. In literature, we continued with our study of fairy tales. Morgan rewrote her write about reading activity in which she summarized the version of Beauty and the Beast as retold by Jan Brett. She did a nice job with her rewrite. We reviewed her work for spelling and grammar. We then completed a Venn Diagram of the Jan Brett version and the version as told by Disney. Morgan did a terrific job comparing and contrasting the stories! We focused primarily on the characters. Next, Morgan and I did shared readings of The Frog Prince and Rumpelstiltskin. We discussed the characters and events of the story. We noticed that in fairy tales, princesses often “weep” instead of “cry” and that very often, if someone is going to do something nice for someone else, they always want something in return! Morgan wrote in her journal today about her weekend. She read it through to edit herself and found a number of mistakes independently! We will review and correct for spelling and grammar in our next session. For Latin today, we reviewed her six vocabulary words. We also wrote in her workbook the meaning of constellations, who created them, and where we can find them. Morgan participated in an online session of Lindamood Bell. They began with finding numbers on an imaginary number line and working back and forth along it to solve equations. She practiced addition, subtraction, and multiplication flashcards. She enjoyed a fun game of multiplication war! Morgan earned a Magical Learning Moment for using jumping to picture tricky facts. She chose the sum/difference of an equation from three equations presented. For reading tasks, she practiced reading from her targeted sight words. These words included difference, although, and complete. Finally, she continued reading in her Anne of Green Gables chapter book.
