Lesson Topic
5-Paragraph Essay Planning and Editing Texts
Lesson Outline
Bobby selected a new topic to address in a 5-paragraph length essay, and he organized his response using a graphic organizer. He selected a topic that asked him to finish the following sentence: I am the only one at this school who ____. He selected three experiences and skills that make him unique, and he began writing the introduction to the essay and the first body paragraph. He also worked on some exercises online, identifying elements that make sentences sound more formal and correcting common errors in different types of texts, and then we applied those processes to improve one of the paragraphs that he wrote today.
We also played a game with a ball containing common errors (they're vs. their, for example) and invented sentences with each one, and discussed some options for literary texts to read next. Bobby said that he would be interested in short stories that are scary or suspenseful.
