Lesson Outline
At the beginning of the session, Brandon and this tutor cut pumpkins and placed the pieces in the playground area and areas at which squirrels were seen but out of reach of students. Brandon seemed to enjoy this activity and watched as the squirrels came out to enjoy eating and storing the pulp from the pumpkins. We then proceeded to complete homework that he had been assigned for today through Thursday. Brandon had reading and math home assignments and both were completed, with one or two breaks taken in between during which Brandon was permitted to play some computer academic games or play with magnetic tiles. Brandon thoroughly enjoyed reading from his book entitled, "Dog man - Lord of the Fleas," by Dave Pilkey; he read out loud for at least 15 minutes. Brandon read articulately, competently, and fluently - and very was able to summarize the content of the chapters read demonstrating good comprehension and analytical skills. He stated that his favorite part of the book was when "'lil Petey showed up in cat jail and showed big Petey his 100 great knock knock jokes about poop!" As Brandon did not have his reading log, this tutor summarized the pages he read (190-251) and the work he completed in a written note to his mother. He completed his spelling homework independent of prompts, circling the correct spelling of word samples given and using them correctly in sentences. In Math, Brandon completed pages 47 - 50 - working quickly, accurately, and independently - he completed Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday's math assignments. We were unable to do I Ready as we did not know his user name or password, but Brandon assured me his mother had this and he would complete this part of his assignment at home. In his Math assignment, Brandon counted single digit numbers to find and circle the sum, and circled the correct answer to show ways to make certain numbers. He also solved word problems independently and quickly. Finally, Brandon used addition to write down the sums of numbers and solved doubles fact addition problems without any difficulty or hesitation. Due to his excellent work and completion of assignments, Brandon was permitted to enjoy an ice cream treat at the end of the session. He graciously offered this tutor and another student a spoonful, but we both politely declined and allowed him to indulge in the treat on his own, which appeared to be the cap of a productive and fun session.
