Lesson Outline
During the first part of the session, Sam continued studying for the exam and making a study outline. Sam then took the test on the structure and principles of the constitution. We then began a study of the first amendment and the five civil liberties protected by the first amendment. I emphasized ,and we discussed that the protections in the Bill of Rights are only against actions by the government and that therefore in any Bill of Rights analysis the first step is to determine if the policy or action in question involves government action as opposed to action by a private entity or citizen. We then discussed and reviewed the establishment clause, and what is meant by separation of church and state . Last, I highlighted that none of the civil liberties is unlimited and began a review of the law of defamation as it impacts the right of free speech. For homework ,Sam is to read the material in the text on the first amendment, pages 128-132 ,and to answer questions 2-4 on page 132.
