In conjunction with Sam's reading assignment , we reviewed the limitations on First Amendment freedoms by discussing specific examples.Limitations on free speech include the law of defamation. Sam took notes on the difficulty for public figures to recover for defamation . We further reviewed restrictions on freedom of assembly and religion by discussing actions available against protestors at funerals of deceased gay servicemen and against protestors outside a business. Last, we discussed how free speech includes flag burning and other symbols. We also looked at the holdings of three US Supreme Court cases restricting free speech rights of public high school students. I handed back Sam's test ,and she made the necessary corrections addressing the "Elastic Clause and the Supremacy Clause".For homework due after the Thanksgiving break, I assigned reading pages 134- 146 and a summary of the Dred Scott decision and answering 4 questions on pages 139 and 145.
