Addition and subtraction of two-digit numbers
Lesson Outline
Nicholas felt well and was in good spirits today following a brief illness; he did not come to school on Friday. We began today's session working on Nicholas's math homework - pages 155 and 156 from his Go Now math workbook. Nicholas has made gains in both his confidence and competence levels working on math problems. He insisted on doing the problems all by hiimself and only having me check it after he was done. He only needed a bit of help with 2 problems. One asked him to determine which number(s) were less than and greater than numbers specified. He also requested some help with the word problem as he was unsure how to read it and whether it required him to add or subtract. Once told, he obtained the right answer independently. We moved onto spelling next. We worked on 8 words and Nicholas was given strategies to remember how to spell them; words beginning with consonant blends (when then who) gave him a bit of trouble. Nicholas was also asked to write the words on a piece of paper as well on a whiteboard in order to reinforce and consolidate his learning.

Lesson Comments
Nicholas's mom was very moved that I had texted her yesterday to ask how he was feeling and remember that I had told her Wednesday that it seemed he was getting sick or coming down with a cold. She told me that the school secretary had called Friday morning and asked that he be picked up due to illness. Jen was impressed that I texted her to ask how he was feeling and offered to work on his spelling words with him over the phone. She thinks the test was last Friday but when asked, Nicholas did not remember if he took a test. He received new words today and we gained good ground reviewing them. I am hoping to review more on Wednesday.
