Multiplication tables, vocbulary, and comprehension questions
Lesson Outline
We enjoyed a very productive and enriching session this afternoon. We began with Avelina practicing her 4 times table, requiring only an initial minimal prompt to elicit concurrent successful outcomes when answering problems. We then progressed to the 5 times table, and Avelina answered all correctly. I also worked in some word problems which I took from the novel we're reading. Avelina was afforded strategies to solve them and used them effectively to arrive at the correct answers. She was then asked to recall the meaning of previously acquired vocabulary words and to summarize where we left off in our novel. We discussed her diorama and Avelina explained what each component represented; we decided against getting sand to add to it today since she was outfitted in a beautiful dress and going to a party after her tutoring session. Next, we finished reading Chapter 7 in 'The Trumpet of the Swan'. Avelina successfully decoded several words and answered comprehension questions indicating excellent understanding. She also was asked what she thought the author's intent was by addressing the swan's "deficit," - not having a voice, and Avelina's comments were insightful and sensitive regardng the swan's challenges. I pointed out the italicized words and how to emphasize them when reading, and Avelina caught on quickly and read with enthusiasm and emphasis. She looked ahead to see the title of the next chapter and Avelina was excited to read that it was entitled, "Love," and she made predictions about what would happen in that chapter and in successive chapters. She enjoyed skimming the book to preview the illustrations and is looking forward to reading the next chapter, 'Love,' when we meet next week.
Avelina's mom did not return calls or texts despite several initiated to her to insure she remembered this appointment for a session. I contacted the school several times during the day, until 1:00 hoping to learn if the session was on as I had a possible medical appointment I had on hold and could have confirmed. Finally, at 1:30, I was contacted and told the mom was cancelling today's session but wished to make a schedule for next week. I think you'll agree that 2 hours notice is too short a time to inform teachers that a session has been cancelled. I had prepared for the session, gone to the library, took out two books for us to read ("The Trumpet of the Swan"), and had prepared a lesson plan. I believe compensation for today is justified. I understand the mom also canceled for Wednesday, 7/03, but 2 days notice is reasonable. I do not expect to be compensated for Wednesday. However, I did want this noted to clarify what I believe to be fair and in the hopes to better manage expectations. Thank you for your consideration.
Avelina greeted me with enthusiasm and was clearly eager and motivated to begin class. Avelina began by practicing her math skills, specifically multiplication by 4. We reviewed math facts and Avelina worked on the exercise for two trials, solving the problems using practical, methodological and consistent strategies; she correctly solved all the problems with which she was presented. Next, we then moved onto the novel, The Trumpet of the Swan," by E.B. White, which I had taken out of the Gardens Library. We first reviewed three vocabulary words from the last chapter and with minimal prompting, Avelina explained each meaning in her own words. Next, I asked her to make some predictions based on the information acquired from the 5 previous chapters she's read thus far. Avelina used good deductive and higher-order reasoning skills to suggest logical possibilities. The exercise proved to be a good segue to a discussion about some literary devices the author used in the novel. We identified alliterative devices, similes, metaphors, and examples of onomatopoeia. I also introduced other literary devices, such as personification and forecasting, which were pointed out as we proceeded to read. We watched a YouTube video of Chapter 6 while Avelina followed along in the book with her finger. I periodically paused to assess her comprehension, and we chose three new vocabulary words to define. Avelina is a bright, energetic, and animated student who is delightful to teach. She is a fast learner, acquires skills readily, and she is receptive and responsive to instructional methods and strategies aimed at strengthening her literary skills.
