Today, we began with the book 'Grace for President' by Kelly DiPucchio. A story about a girl named Grace who decides to run for president in her school's mock election after learning that no woman has ever held the office. This book explains the electoral college in a simplified, easy way to understand. Next, we watched a quick video about the president's job and the criteria needed to run for president. Then, we read descriptions and fun facts about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln in preparation for us making a President's Then and Now book.
Remi discussed and answered questions about the parts of a map and how to read the symbols on a map. He wrote and illustrated a story about a haunted house.
Libby worked on a craft showing the 3 branches of government. She cut out a tree with 3 branches, each named with a different branch of government, as well as leaves showing descriptions of each branch. Then, Libby glued the tree onto a piece of construction paper, glued the leaves onto the correct branch, and colored all of the parts.

Today's lesson introduced the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of the United States government. We discussed why these branches were formed, who makes up each branch, and the duties of each branch. Then, Libby took a picture of the White House, U.S. Capitol, and Supreme Court and matched them with their corresponding descriptions.

Remi completed several activities pertaining to the study of Christopher Columbus and his accomplishments. We read together and discussed a reading comprehension story about Columbus, and he answered in writing questions about the article. He made a story wheel about Columbus' journey. He learned about the route he took, why he was crossing the Atlantic, and who financed his journey.
The purpose of government is to keep people safe and to help them to work together.
