Hate Speech, Hate Groups, and Freedom of Press
Lesson Outline
Andrew and I reviewed arguments for and against the protection of Hate Speech. Andrew inquired about the prevalence of hate groups and hate crimes, and we reviewed two available resources from the Southern Poverty Law Center (Hate Map) and the ADL (HEAT Map). We discussed the nuances of these resources. As we began our discussion related to Freedom of Press, we reviewed censorship and the impact of Prior Restraint. We discussed gag orders and sequestering in the context of legal proceedings.
