As a substitute for the students' PE class today, due to inclement weather the students read "Dog Man" together and then spent the remainder of the class period playing video games. The students were compliant and well behaved.
The teacher presented a PowerPoint showing children expressing different emotions. The teacher introduced each emotion in Spanish, and the students repeated after her. Afterwards, the teacher handed out flashcards, and the students identified the emotions the teacher was mimicking. Next, the students played a memory game, saying the emotion in Spanish each time they made a match. To conclude, the students completed a worksheet where they described how they felt using the emotions they learned in class today.
Today, we began with a review of the U.S. coins. The visual differences of the coins were described, the presidents on the coins were named, and their values were stated. Then, we used realistic-sized plastic coins to work on fundamental money concepts, including counting, sorting, and addition. The number of each coin needed to make one dollar was discussed, and the amounts were counted and sorted into groups. Once the correct amount was reached, it was traded in for a one-dollar bill.
I introduced the students to the simple but beautiful line drawing of one of Picasso’s peace doves. I demonstrated a step-by-step drawing of a dove having each student follow along on her/his paper. Then I had each student draw a dove independently by following a simple step-by-step worksheet. They drew several doves each and then painted them. Since they know how to mix colors, they enjoy making colors out of the primary paint colors: red, yellow, and blue. Super work!
Students were asked to draw the night sky including everything they see at night. Next, we labeled the objects. Then, we read from the Science book about scientists and telescopes. Lastly, we added telescopes to the pictures.
Today, we completed the Statue of Liberty penny experiment. The observations of the pennies during each stage of the experiment were described and colored to match on the recording sheet. Then, we worked on a U.S. coin booklet. The details of each coin were described, the presidents were named, and the coin values were written in two ways. These activities were stapled into the Social Studies journal, and we finished with a money melody.

Today our Lower School artists created their color wheels in paint. We started with our three primary colors: red, yellow, and blue, and they created secondary and tertiary colors on a color wheel activity for their art notebooks. Well done, artists!
