Michael completed four science passages since we last met. He got almost all questions correct in the first two passages but incorrectly solved roughly 40% of the questions in the last two passages. The last passage he did not fully complete.
Note: the passages get progressively more challenging.
We reviewed a total of six science passages today.
We worked on how to interpret various charts and graphs. Michael quickly picked up these methods after my explanation.
I have already seen improvement in his interpretation of these passages!
Megan ordered an ACT book for Michael to keep, and he was given it today to take home. I assigned him the following homework: science practice test (pages 80-91). Michael should complete this practice test using a timer (35 minutes). Michael was on time and on track the entire session. He is a great student...very receptive and willing to learn!
Today, Vlad and I focused on SAT/ACT vocabulary and and the English Convention portion of the test. My suggestion is as much practice as possible before Vlad takes the test in September. The skills we focused on today are subject/pronoun agreement, reading the before and after context for each question, punctuation (difference among period, semi-colon, colon), connotation subtleties of similar words, than/then, object vs. subject, wordiness, grasping the main idea. For homework, Vlad is completing two lessons in the vocabulary workbook and completing the next reading in the English/writing section.
Today, Vlad, Katya and I met together to do some practice reading comprehension, writing and convention exercises. The dynamic worked together for today. This was a helpful session and it allowed me to assess both strengths and weaknesses in skills for both students. The things we discussed today and reviewed today were: sentence structure (punctuation, comma usage, run-on sentences, comma splices), avoiding wordiness, avoiding repetition, understanding transitional phrases for meaning, and trying to figure out what skill the question is addressing before answering. Good session. Vlad has an ACT book, but I would like to order a 2019 SAT book for Katya. We will meet again July 3rd.
