Today, Vlad, Katya and I met together to do some practice reading comprehension, writing and convention exercises. The dynamic worked together for today. This was a helpful session and it allowed me to assess both strengths and weaknesses in skills for both students. The things we discussed today and reviewed today were: sentence structure (punctuation, comma usage, run-on sentences, comma splices), avoiding wordiness, avoiding repetition, understanding transitional phrases for meaning, and trying to figure out what skill the question is addressing before answering. Good session. Vlad has an ACT book, but I would like to order a 2019 SAT book for Katya. We will meet again July 3rd.

Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary, Grammar and Conventions
Lesson Outline
Dylan had completed several sections for homework. We reviewed these and discussed the philosophies behind the answers. We then completed several English, grammar and writing sections together and reviewed them. I would like for Dylan to practice over the summer until he takes the test. We made some copies of more English sections so that he can practice on his own. He has completed the entire 2019 SAT book, as well as the SAT Vocabulary book. Great job, Dylan!

Reading Comprehension, Essay Rubric Review (Meaning, Development, Organization, Language, Conventions) , Vocabulary
Lesson Outline
Dylan shared his final synthesis essay that he wrote for English class with me. We discussed his essay in relation to the 5-trait rubric as mentioned above. He did a great job. The skill I think Dylan mastered in this essay is incorporating quotes from more than one text into his own sentences with meaning. We then reviewed the next two chapters in SAT VOCABULARY. Once again, Dylan is adding to his knowledge of language. We then reviewed the reading comprehension passage that Dylan did for homework. We discussed the reasonings behind the correct answers. This session was a bit unique from other sessions, but very productive!

What a productive session today! We got through several excises in both sets of skills. Dylan is making progress in his reading comprehension section of the test. He is reading more quickly and has a higher percentage of correct answers. He is able to correct wrong answers by thoughtfully going back, and insightfully and quickly deducing the correct answer. Dylan, as usual is becoming more enriched in his SAT vocabulary and recognizes many of the words from literature he reads. We need to get him signed up for the test! :)

Intersecting graphs, foiling and factoring, area, and scatter plots
Lesson Outline
Rory and I worked on various SAT problems involving factoring expressions, foiling binomials, interpreting scatter plots, and systems of equations. I encouraged her to do a problem building a formula from data and she was able to get the answer. Rory showed that she has a good ability to make educated guesses.

Preparation for ACT test using study guide
Lesson Outline
I worked with Julia on advanced word problems based on population data and percents. We also covered problems dealing with formula manipulations, function comparisons, and graphs. We worked on both multiple choice and grid answer problems. I helped Julia recognize the best strategies for time management on the test and which problems are best left to the very end. There was no assignment.

Lesson Comments
Julia continues to do well on the problems but lacks knowledge in some basic areas, such as geometry. She also has difficulty letting go of problems and loses time by not letting go and going on to the next problem.
