ACT
Lesson Outline
Today we focused on the ACT coming up in April. We logged into the College Board and Matthew had to upload a photo to be approved, so he did that. Then we looked up the formula sheet and realized there IS NONE! Matthew needs to have all formulas memorized. Then we looked at the different math topics he needs to know. Then we practiced some probability Questions. Moving forward, we will continue to prep for the ACT while simulatneously learning the Trig that is in PreCalc he will need to know for the exam.

3D formulas
Lesson Outline
Today Carson worked on an "art" project by creating a poster with all of the relevant formulas. We looked up all of the surface area and volume formulas in the 8th grade standards. Carson used a poster and markers to create a visual of the 3D figure, then he wrote the corresponding formulas. We then discussed their properties. S stands for "slant height", H stands for "height", etc. Tomorrow we will get an application example of each.

Kaitlin was sneezing a lot and had a sore throat. Since my throat was still not up to a lot of reading, we quit our session at about 8:50, 8 minutes early.

Fractions in Equations
Lesson Outline
Today Aiden began by asking what the difference between the constant of proportion and the unit rate is. This is a past topic that he has been stuck on for a bit because he doesn't understand the difference between the two. I did a quick example showing him that 10 cows in 5 days or 10/5 would reduce down to 2 cows in 1 day or 2/1=2... so the unit rate is 2 cows per day while the constant of proportion would be 1/2 (the constant that is multiplied from one fraction to get an equivalent form of another). I told Aiden that it is not as important to know the vocabulary as it is to apply the math and that he already knows the math so he's in good shape. I encouraged us to move on and he did. Then we started by reviewing yesterday's lesson on GCF and simplifying fractions. Then we discussed the LCM (least common multiple). Aiden had a great understanding of this. I asked him questions to ensure he knew the difference between the GCF and the LCM, and he did. Then I showed him an activity with fractions mixed into the equations. The first problem had a denominator of 4 and 5 in it. I asked Aiden what the LCM is and he said 20. I showed Aiden how if we multiple both sides of the equation by 20, it will clear the fractions and turn the problem into something much simpler. We had recess during our period so we will continue with this tomorrow.

Joshua had difficulty with his homework last night. We spent the first half of the class correcting his work. Fortunately, Joshua made the same mistakes in each problem, so it was an easy fix. We pulled up a corrective assignment and practiced some of those problems together. Joshua will work on more practice tonight. We discussed our pacing and how we need to focus more. Joshua has gotten comfortable with me and often gets distracted making jokes. While I do find him amusing, I reminded him that time is of essence, and we still have a half of a unit to finish.
