Lesson Comments
A couple of weeks ago, Richard told me that this might be his last year at the Batt school since he is doing so well. I teased him and said I'll have to make sure he's not doing well so I can still have him as a student next year.

Today we reviewed the homework problems that Joshua had as a review. He did much better this time, however he is still struggling with the phase shift of functions. We reworked his errors and he seems to understand his mistakes, but needs more practice to ensure he is consistent. Next, we did review problems together. We practiced with our calculator how to solve trig equations by graphing.

Trig Ratios
Lesson Outline
Today Andrew and I continued into our Trig lesson that we started before the spring break. We reviewed the acronym SOHCAHTOA and how we can use it to set up the ratios for sine, cosine, and tangent. We practiced, given a triangle, how to find the trig ratios of each angle. Then we discussed the concept of inverse. Andrew recalled inverses undo each other like addition/subtraction, multiplication/division, sine/sine inverse. We then used the inverse trig functions to solve for the missing angle. These problems were a bit tricky at first so we will continue with this tomorrow.

Nth Roots
Lesson Outline
After yesterday's lesson I wanted to scaffold the content a bit. I provided Ben with a graphic of all the Nth roots from 1-15. It showed Ben how 1^2=1, 2^2=4, 3^2=9 and so on. We discussed how it goes from squaring to square rooting and how these operations are inverses of each other. As we were working, he began to get distracted and bring up random topics. In a teasing way I said to Ben, "The function of your behavior is escape, Come back to meeee!" He asked me WTH I was talking about. I explained to him that we as humans have 4 behavior functions: escape, access to tangibles, attention, and sensory/automatic. It opened up a dialogue of his behavior, his diagnoses, and learning about how his mind works. He said he wondered if he was a bad attention seeking kid or if his brain just worked differently. I told him that he absolutely isn't bad, but he learns, processes, and experiences the world differently than others. He explained to me how he has a cylinder of emotions and when communicating with someone with a lot of emotions it pulls from his cylinder more and more until it has no emotion left and it takes time for it to refill. He explained it to me as one of the ways his autism affects him. I could completely relate.

PJ and I had two sessions today. In the first session, PJ and I started a new chapter on the Introduction to Solving Equations. We worked in our online Savvas acount. We discussed what it means for an expression to be an equation and what it means for two sides to be equivalent. We considered a scale with 3 blocks on one side and 9 blocks on the other. I asked PJ what we could do to make the scale balanced. He said add 6 blocks to the left side. I agreed and then showed him how an equation could be used to represent this situation: 3+x=9. In our 2nd session we got more practice solving these problem types. PJ did a great job recalling how what you do to one side of the equation you do to the other to keep it equivalent. Then we read some word problems that required PJ to set up and then solve. I was impressed with PJs ability to read through the word problem and properly set up the equations. Today we worked with addition and subtraction. Tomorrow we will work on multiplication and division.

Lesson Comments
Christopher is not interested in finishing reading The Watsons Go to Birmingham. I allowed him to write today and told him to bring his own book tomorrow. It is a challenge to find something that motivates him to read to completion. He acts interested for a while and then loses interest before the end.
