We completed an exercise from a grammar book focused on combining sentences using subordinate clauses. Bobby additionally prepared a topic sentence and outline to use in drafting a persuasive paragraph again using development in the Adirondack Park as the subject. We began the guided writing of the paragraph, and I introduced Bobby to use of the rhetorical question in this type of writing.
This morning we used this time to work on the iMovie. Bobby has prepared his outline/timeline and is working on harvesting pictures and data. The movie must be a minimum of one and a half minutes. We appear to be moving forward once again.
This morning Bobby and I reviewed the problems on page 307 which featured congruent shapes and the proportion of one side with the other. We learned how to set up the proportion and then solve for an unknown. This proved to be challenging for Bobby but his engagement and preparedness was much better today than yesterday. Homework is to do the mid chapter quiz #'s 1-17.
We reviewed the definitions of theme, plot, and conflict and identified the main conflict in the novel and reviewed the ongoing themes.Homework read chapters 29 and 30 and write a paragraph discussing the plot of chapter 29. We discussed a topic sentence for the paragraph and some appropriate transition phrases to use .
We reviewed,edited , and completed Bobby's guided essay discussing the benefits and disadvantages of gated communities in Florida and by comparison the impact the border fence has on the townspeople in the novel. We used transition words between paragraphs such as 'similarly and likewise'.
We also completed a second guided essay on the balance of development and nature in the Adirondacks.
Bobby is still having some difficulty formulating a topic sentence from the prompt(question) ,and I will continue to work on this . We also today reviewed Bobby's homework on rewriting sentences by varying sentence structure.
This afternoon Bobby and I continued our study of early Greece by exploring how early government evolved. We learned that individual townships developed their own form of government due to their relative isolation from each other. We reviewed the responses from page 259 before beginning the homework on pages 262-267 #'s 1-4.
This afternoon we worked on the story boards for Bobby's video. We are finally moving forward as Bobby gains confidence and some level of expertise in making a simple digital video. Baby steps...
This morning Bobby and I reviewed pages 302 and 303 on congruent shapes and angles. Bobby did not complete all of the homework so we focused some of our efforts in completing the assignment. We practiced comparing the angles, sides and shapes of geometric shapes which are either similar or congruent. Homework is to complete 6-11 on pages 307-308.
We examined recurrent themes and located support in the text ,specifically studying how and why Benny changes his attitudes. As Bobby had some difficulty recalling certain plot lines, we also reviewed the text to refresh his memory so that he would be better able to appreciate the upcoming conflict in the novel. Last, we added to his list of vocabulary words drawn from the reading.
