Bobby worked on his essay today. We looked at outlining strategies and discussed opposing views, current events, and rationales for ideas to form the basis for additional material for the essay. He edited and added another paragraph. He took the time at the end of class to really put some thought into his writing and his opinion. We discussed logical organization of essays and the final summary to answer questions in the title with the last paragraph.
Bobby turned in his homework assignment. We looked over the answers together. We continued in the Pre-Algebra text to formulate an equation for x with the perimeter of a rectangle. Bobby solved for x. He showed his work and the steps involved. We continued with exercises in the text - solving equations.

Today, I was running late because of a terrible accident and traffic jam.
Bobby edited a paragraph (Daily Edit.) He viewed tips on comma usage on Chompchomp.com. He used commas to correct sentence fragments and run-on sentences. He read a selection and answered comprehension questions on ReadTheory.org. He re-read the selection to locate clues to the comprehension questions. We read a chapter in "A Long Walk to Water."
Bobby continues to lay out more rooms for his dream home. Dining room, Master bedroom, four other smaller bedrooms, and a laundry room are laid out in 1/4" on drawing is equal to 1' on the finished home. A square footage maximum limit has been set at 5,000 square feet. As Bobby finishes cutting out each room, he calculates the square footage and adds this to his grand total. At this point, he should have no problem keeping under the 5,000 square feet maximum. Good session.
Bobby corrected grammatical errors on a Daily Edit. He viewed a powerPoint on punctuation. The power Point (Chompchomp.com) informed Bobby on how to use commas in introductory, interrupting, and concluding phrases in sentences. He learned when to use a colon and semi-colon. Bobby read and answered comprehension questions on ReadTheory.org. He can do a couple selections for homework. We read two chapters in "A Long Walk to Water."
Today, Bobby diagrammed the grammatical parts of a few practice sentences. Next, we continued to revise Bobby's sports essay, looking closely at the structure of his sentences.
Today Bobby and I went over prepositions and transitions. Bobby practiced diagramming his own sentence, and then he worked on the conclusion of his sports essay.
This morning we practiced our note taking abilities by watching the Paleoworld installment on man's early attempts at finding fossils. Although this particular video is only thirty minutes long, it is filled with facts relating to man's early efforts and describes some of the types of mistakes or "blunders" that were committed. The movie contained a number of individuals and their biographies along with engaging visuals. Bobby is learning how to differentiate between pertinent information and "ground clutter" which has little or no relevance to the central theme. We will complete an assessment based on his notes to see how well he was able to capture important facts. Although the subject matter is more appropriate to a science class, Bobby can apply the same approach to other subject areas.

This exercise will take time and we will continue to practice our note taking and outlining skills for the duration of the school year. I cannot emphasize enough that Bobby be tested again as a necessary followup to his evaluation three (?) years ago. We are still awaiting the arrival of the social studies text by the way.
